The Color Factory- NYC New Interactive Pop Up Museum

NYC Pop up Alert! I feel like lately, especially this year, there’s been so many new interactive pop up experiences in NYC. This month I had the opportunity to visit one of the newest pop ups The Color Factory!

The Color Factory is a collaborative interactive exhibit that debuted in San Francisco in 2017! If you’ve been following my blog or Instagram account @msjenniferdanielle then you know I’ve attended a lot of the new interactive experiences in NYC throughout summer 2018. If you are looking for things to do when visiting New York City, I highly recommend attending a few of these events while they last. I have more places to share with you over the next few months in NYC and may be in a city near you if you do not live necessarily in NYC, so be sure to subscribe to keep up to date with the latest pop ups around the world.  Also check out my post on NYC pop ups like The Dream Machine and The Egg House for more.  To see more from this event after this post, check out my Color Factory highlights on Instagram for more from inside of the event.

I honestly have to say The Color Factory has been one of my favorite pop up interactive experiences this year. I never really know what to expect, and actually had the opportunity to attend the Color Factory the first day it opened this August in NYC. I loved this because I could experience the museum prior to viewing the photos on Instagram that may have been posted on other accounts making it more exciting not to know what to expect. There are a few things I wanted to highlight that I loved about this experience over others.

Much like the other events I discuss, in order to get access to this event you will need to head to the Color Factory website, pick a date, and book tickets in advance to attend the museum. This museum is popular, and art installations are growing in popularity, therefore you want to be sure to plan ahead and purchase your tickets whenever you first hear about it or plan to visit NYC before they sell out. It’s currently only in NYC until the end of October. It’s very rare you can find tickets for pop ups available online the same day for purchase and you cannot purchase tickets on site. The tickets are $38 and It’s also a good idea to plan to arrive 15 minutes before your time block to ensure you do not miss your time block. Trust me, I’ve come very close to missing my time blocks for the events at time as well and the tickets are non-refundable.

I love the area the Color Factory is located downtown on Varick Street and spend a lot of time there with friends visiting art galleries, restaurants, and shopping nearby. It’s a great area to spend time after the event if your planning a day.

When you first enter the Color Factory, you will see a huge white block staircase to your right, the Color Factory sign in front of you, poems for the city under each color on the left, and rainbow confetti on the ceiling near the check in. Perfect for a quick photo op as seen below.

For me, one of the best parts about the museum was when you arrive you have the opportunity to check your coat and bag. This is ideal because you do not want to be worried about watching your things as you experience the museum. It seemed very organized and I had no problem checking my bags and heading into the first room.

At the beginning of the event the team was passing out Mochi ice cream balls which I have seen around a lot of events lately. You pick a color to eat and take a seat while they provide you with instructions on the exhibit before starting. I thought this was a great idea because sometimes its hard to tell the best way to move about this sort of events when there is not necessarily a guide. It’s nice to have a plan or order everyone agrees on to create the best experience for everyone attending the museum. I thought the museum did a great job of keeping things moving but also keeping it fun.

Another new experience was they provide you with a mini card, the size of a credit card, to take with you throughout the exhibition and scan in each room to store your photos on which would automatically send to your email address after taking it. This was the first time I saw anything like this at one of these events.  It’s great if you love to take photos to later post and share with friends and family on social media without worrying about carrying around your camera or asking someone to take photos of you and your friends and pray they look good after.

It also helps to keep things moving along. All of the cameras are installed in the wall in perfect angle of the installation and all you have to do is scan your card. The timer will then start to countdown while you pose and when your finished send it to your email address without you having to keep re-entering your information. You enter it once in the beginning and your done. The entire museum has well lit rooms and I think they did a great job creating colorful themed rooms for pretty pictures. Just try not to mix up your scan cards with your friends like I did at one point since they all look the same.

Another perk about this museum is you can take your time to experience each room without feeling pressured to move forward, however you just cannot go backwards one you complete each room which is understandable for the next time block. There were also sweet treats around the museum like candy, mochi ice-cream balls, and macaroons.

One of the reasons I enjoyed this museum so much was because of the number of things there were to do throughout the museum. Sometimes pop ups can be great for photo ops or “instagrammable moments” with great scenery, but I really enjoyed the type of activities that they had at this museum.

I would say there were about 10 rooms throughout the museum.

One of my favorite rooms I have to say was the room with the party theme. I must have spent the most time in this room. I loved the glittery wall, music, and light up floor in front of the mirror. It reminded me of being in a party and naturally since I love to party and have fun this room was one of my favorites. They were also handing out goodies from Revlon at the booth in this room which was a plus.

Another favorite was the room with the fan blowing all of the colorful balloons around you while you took videos or photos. I call it the Beyoncé room because I felt like Beyoncé in front of the fan and never realized how much more fun photo shoots are with a little wind, especially for videos.

The next room in my list of faves I enjoyed because it provided you with colorful headphones to put on and listen to guided instructions on coloring the person sitting on the other side of the room. You may or may not know that person, and I thought it was interesting to see your color perspective of a friend or stranger. At the end you swap cards and get to take their sheet home with you.

I was also obsessed with this room below. As soon as you enter you begin to answer questions laid throughout the room and follow the arrows and lines around the rooms based on your responses which ultimately led you to one of the doors that revealed a color about your personality. My room color was yellow! If you attended this event, let me know what color you got below in the comments and if you felt it matched your personality description.

The last room included probably the best ball pit room I’ve ever seen. I find that all of these events end with a ball pit.  I’m a child at heart so it’s natural for me to want to jump in the ball pit when its not crowded.  I must say this was the biggest one I’ve ever seen and with the best layout. They even had camera’s installed in the ceiling to take photos of you from up above while you lay in the pit with your friends. All of my photos looked like I was drowning and were not cute, so I decided to share this photo with you I took on my own camera instead.

A cute fact I learned at the museum: I never realized how many perfume bottles over the years were shaped in the shape of the body. There is an exhibit displaying all of the different perfume bottles designs which I shared in my Instagram highlights.

Some tips for attending Interactive art events:

If you rather attend the event with your friends and less children, it may be better to pick a weekday that works for you if possible as more children tend to attend things like this on the weekend with their parents for fun.

Travel light- it’s not much of a concern for this event since you can check your bags, however the less you have on you the more fun it is throughout the event.

Even though you want to look cute, wear a cute outfit however you may not want to wear heels throughout the event like I did, or at least have flats on you to change into throughout photo ops or at the end lol.

Attend with friends one or two friends. Too large of a group may be fun but can also become overwhelming.

I would definitely recommend attending The Color Factory Museum in NYC if you can catch it while it is in town. Sometimes events like this will be extended if they do really well during its run,  so even if you can’t make it or if there are not tickets available when you try to book,  always check back to see if it’s been extended towards the end.
